Tanzania - Cassava Pomotion

Partner: Diocese of Mara (2008 - 2011)

Cassava is the food security strategic crop for Mara Region. The crop contributes about 80% of all the food security needs of people in the Region. However the crop is currently getting jeopardised by the notable severe disease known as the Uganda Variant Cassava Mosaic Virus - CMD (UgV). UgV is very virulent characterised by reduced leaf size, thus resulting into stunted plants and significant yield reduction hence big economic losses. The project envisages multiplying mosaic resistant cassava varieties at the Buhemba Rural Agricultural Centre and at farmers’ level to arrest the situation.
